Eines Nachts, am Hofe des Kalifen, erzählt die schöne und kluge Scheherezade eine ihrer Geschichten: Es war einmal ein Ehepaar, Musaffar und Aisha. Am Tage der Geburt ihres Sohnes Asamat erschien Aisha ein weiser Mann, der dem Neugeborenen Glück und Liebe prophezeite, wenn Asamat alle Prüfungen bestehen sollte. Der Weise hinterließ eine Zauberflöte, die den Jungen vor Kummer und Unglück bewahren sollte, so bald dieser das 20. Lebensjahr erreicht. Die Jahre vergingen und Asamat wuchs zu einem starken, tapferen und edelmütigen Jüngling heran. Eines Tages nun begleitete er eine Karawane mit Geschenken für den Kalifen, als diese plötzlich von Räubern überfallen wird. Doch dank einer sprechenden Kobra, die Asamat aufgrund der Zauberflöte zu Hilfe eilt, überlebt er das Unheil. Nun geleitet die Kobra den Jüngling zur Karawane des Händlers Karabai, der Asamat mit in die Hauptstadt des Kalifen nimmt. Dort angekommen, arbeitet er als Karabais Sklave auf dem Markt. Angesichts verschiedener Intrigen, beginnt für Asamat nun eine harte Zeit voller Prüfungen…
